What Is a Dental Implant — And What Does It Do?

Model of a dental implant in the jaw

Simply stated, an implant is a tiny, discreet post placed in your jaw and gums. They are made from safe and durable materials, like titanium.

Once it has been secured and the area has healed, then your dental implant can connect an abutment and custom restoration into place to restore your smile. Our New York team commonly uses dental implants to fill both small and substantial spaces in our patients' smiles after they lose natural teeth.

Implants Protect Bone Health

/

Dental implants don't just improve your appearance and function — they also improve your health. Often, bone loss follows tooth loss, because your jaw lacks the stimulation normally offered by tooth roots. Traditional dentures and bridges can't prevent this problem — but an implant-supported restoration from our dental team can.

Implants Are Just One Component Of a Four-Part Solution

The reason why implants are so effective is that they work in harmony with three other components to form a lasting solution. Implants are bolstered by:

Abutments

To secure your implant to your restoration, we'll need to place a connector piece called an abutment. Both your dental implant and abutment will be completely hidden by your final restoration.

Restoration

Whether you need a crown, a denture, or a bridge to complete your smile, our Manhattan, NY, dentists are here to help. We offer custom dental restorations designed with your specific features and needs in mind.

You

You contribute directly to your final dental results. How? Each implant must undergo a process called osseointegration, where your gum and jawbone fuse the implant into place. This provides the implant with unmatched stability.

Put Yourself First And Choose Manhattan Dental Practices

The Qualifications Necessary To Be a Dental Implant Candidate

Missing a Tooth

Some of our New York patients are missing one tooth, while others are missing all their natural teeth. Regardless of your situation, our nonjudgmental team may be able to help by offering tooth extraction for any teeth that are beyond repair.

Having Enough Bone

Your titanium implant will need a certain amount of bone material in order to fuse into place. If you don't have enough bone in your jaw, we may need to perform bone grafting to make you eligible for dental implants.

Having Healthy Gums

The health of your gums is crucial to the success of your implant. Rest assured, we won't place your dental implant unless we're sure that your gums are in the right shape for dental treatment.

What to Expect When You Get Dental Implants

Implant Consultation

Being chosen as your partner in the dental implant process is a genuine honor. If you decide to work with us, we'll earn your trust, starting with your consultation. During this visit to our New York dental office, we'll listen what you have to say, assess your smile, and gather your medical history.

Supplementary Treatment

In some cases, you may need supplementary dental treatment before becoming an implant candidate. Our dentists can help with procedures like tooth extraction and bone grafting; we will refer you to a trusted surgeon if you need a sinus lift.

Implant Placement

An in-house surgeon will carefully place your dental implant by making an opening in your gums and jawbone. The surgeon can use freehand methods and data from your CT scan to complete this step.

Abutment Placement

The next step in your dental implant treatment is abutment placement. Depending on the case, it can take place after your implant placement or as a separate surgery.

Temporary Restoration

After the Manhattan surgeon places your abutments, our team waits for the area to heal before placing your implant. Until then, we may be able to provide you with a temporary restoration while you wait, so you can have a complete smile.

Restoration Placement

We use a trusted partner lab to fabricate natural-looking restorations. After your implant has undergone osseointegration and the area has healed, Dr. YooKyung Park will restore your implant. She can place a crown, bridge, or denture, depending on your case.
