Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are placed on the back (lingual), surfaces of the teeth. In addition to the difference in placement, the brackets must also be custom-made according to the shape of your teeth. In most other respects, lingual braces work much like traditional braces. By applying continual force, your teeth will gradually achieve proper alignment. Typically, treatment takes about 18 to 36 months, depending on the severity of misalignment.
What are the benefits of Lingual Braces?
When using this method of orthodontics, elastic bands are not required because special brackets are used to clip onto the wire. At Manhattan Dental Practices, we use nano braces, which are very small braces that minimize noticeability.
Lingual braces offer patients several distinct advantages. They are often called invisible braces because they are virtually unnoticeable to others. This often makes lingual braces a desirable option for professionals and teens who do not want others to notice their orthodontic treatment. Additionally, patients who are active and play contact sports can take advantage of a reduced risk of injury since the brackets do not contact the lips.
After treatment with traditional braces, many patients are concerned about white spots on their teeth. These spots are caused by decalcification. With lingual braces, signs of decalcification are hidden, allowing you to fully enjoy the results of your straighter smile.
Another benefit of lingual braces is that they remain on your teeth at all times. Other invisible solutions, such as Invisalign®, are removable. This means you face a risk of losing your mouthpiece each time you remove it. Hidden braces are always working, and they do not rely on you to remember to put them back in after eating or brushing your teeth.
Why get lingual braces?
If you have been hesitant to straighten your smile because you do not want to wear traditional braces, lingual braces may be a fitting solution for you. Lingual braces are placed behind the teeth to provide discreet treatment while still offering the same orthodontic benefits.
We understand that each patient has their own goals and needs. You can count on us to personalize your treatment for the best possible results. Dr. Ryan Trulby in New York, NY, is a board-certified orthodontist who can provide detail-oriented care to help you align your smile.
What is involved with lingual braces?
Dr. Trulby will use our advanced iTero® digital scanner to take digital impressions of your smile. We will send this information to the fabrication company to create the custom wires and brackets.
Once your braces are ready, Dr. Trulby will bond the brackets to the back surfaces of your teeth. Then he will attach the wires directly to the nano brackets. We will monitor your progress over the next 18 to 36 months, making adjustments as necessary to help you achieve a straight, healthy smile. Thanks to modern innovations in orthodontics, achieving a straighter, healthier smile no longer means having to suffer feelings of self-consciousness throughout treatment.
